Rules of Operation
Facilities: The Manager of animal facilities is responsible for the care of all research animals maintained at Hunter College. The facility is located in Hunter North and includes rooms for housing, testing, quarantine, and surgical procedures.
The facility staff provides animal husbandry services and monitors all animals daily. Fees for this routine care are charged on a per diem basis. Technical services are available on a fee-for-service basis.
Training: Students and postdocs who will work with animals on approved protocols should begin the training program at their convenience by logging onto CITI (www.citiprogram.org) and selecting City University of New York as their institution. After registering, select "I am here to take the Lab Animal Welfare courses" and choose the appropriate "Learner Group" ("Researchers, students, facility staff, key personnel"). The Learner Group contains the required modules. Students will have opportunity to print a certification page when they have successfully completed the tests for all required modules. They should present a copy of the completion report to the Animal Facility Training Coordinator who will conduct a tour of the animal facility and arrange any necessary hands-on training.
Ordering Animals: All purchase orders for animals must be placed by the Facility Manager. Please refer to the Animal Acquisition policy (http://research.hunter.cuny.edu/policy%20for%20Animal%20Acquisition.doc) before submitting an order. Transfer of animals from other institutions must be pre-approved and coordinated with the Facility Manager.
Information: Contact Barbara Wolin, Facility Manager (772-5228) with any questions about training, animal acquisition and housing.
